ICE Agent In Campaign Controversy Wants Statements Suppressed

Cory Voorhis Allegedly Accessed Database, Gave Info To Beauprez

Attorneys for an immigration agent accused of improperly giving information to a political campaign asked a judge Monday to suppress statements the agent made to his supervisors.

Cory Voorhis had invoked his 5th Amendment right against self-incrimination when he was asked about the incident by his bosses, but they questioned him anyway, witnesses testified at a hearing in Denver federal court.

Voorhis, a Denver-based agent for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, is accused of giving information from a restricted federal crime database to the campaign of Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob Beauprez. It ended up in a campaign ad.

Voorhis faces misdemeanor charges of intentionally exceeding authorized access to a computer and obtaining information from a federal agency.

Monday's hearing was on the defense motion to bar from the trial any statements Voorhis made to supervisors after taking the 5th. The content of those statements was not immediately clear.

Jeff Copp, special agent in charge of the Denver ICE office, testified that when Voorhis invoked the 5th, Copp ordered him to leave his office but summoned him back.

Copp said he then questioned Voorhis about why he checked the database for information on an illegal immigrant whose case had come before Beauprez's opponent, Bill Ritter, when Ritter was Denver district attorney...

FBI agent John Eldig testified that in at least one other conversation, Voorhis told two immigration agents, including his immediate supervisor, that he was the source of information given to Beauprez's campaign...
